Bottlers fined $100,000 for selling germ-infected water

VietNamNet Bridge – HCM City Department of Health inspectors have handed out fines of VND1.8 billion (US$101,123) to ice and bottled water plants for violating food safety and hygiene standards.

I
nspector Nguyen Minh Hung said the department had inspected 610 ice and water bottled plants in the city from February 16 to May 21.

Of those, 360 plants were fined for violating food safety and hygiene standards. Some 100 of the 244 tested samples failed to meet sanitary standards.

The samples were tainted with disease-causing bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E.Coli and Coliform.

After the inspections, the department sealed up and disposed of around 100,000 litres of bottled water.

Underground source

The sources of underground water in the city are under serious bacterial contamination, according to a report from the Clean Water and Rural Environmental Hygiene Centre of the municipal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Most well water in the city is polluted and unsafe for daily use or to use for ice or bottled water.

Dr Huynh Mai of the department said bottled water plants violating food safety and hygiene standards often ignored the bottle-washing process.

Employees also were not trained about food safety and hygiene, and often wore dirty clothes.

For ice production units, the working environment does not ensure hygiene standards, according to the city.

Huynh Le Thai Hoa, head of the Food Safety and Hygiene Management Office, said an outbreak of digestive system illnesses could occur if the department failed to closely inspect these plants.
